ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD… EDUCATION for Children
United Way works to advance the common good by targeting its strategies at those critical passages in life that can present opportunities for individuals and families to dramatically increase their chances for long term success. This approach maximizes United Way’s effectiveness, because it allows us to improve lives and communities not just in the short term, and not just on the surface, but in a lasting and meaningful way.
Community Level Goal
Preparing Children for Success in School and in Life
Priority Area
Staying on Track for High School Graduation
United Way Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program
Our Investment:
Adolescent
girls in southeastern Pennsylvania face many challenges. Poverty violence and
negative peer and media pressures make it harder for girls to choose the healthy
attitudes and behaviors that lead to success as adults. Currently, most programs
targeting adolescents focus on teenaged boys. The United Way Women’s
Initiative created Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow to address that imbalance.
The Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow program is devoted to supporting adolescent girls (grades 6 and 7) by helping them develop core values that will protect them from negative influences and support their success as adults. The United Way Women’s Initiative encourages and supports adolescent girls in developing and maintaining attitudes and behaviors related to the “six pillars of character” – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness caring and citizenship.
Results for our Community:
“I
want to give my daughter Rani everything she needs to be the success I know
she can be, but unfortunately, as a single father the one thing I can’t
give her is the guidance she needs from women who understand what she’s
going through.
The positive influences that Rani receives through the United Way Girls Today,
Leaders Tomorrow program are invaluable. Since she joined the program I’ve
seen her mature from a passive, and sometimes irresponsible, girl to a confident
and motivated young lady.
At a time when so many negative influences surround her, I’m happy
that Rani can be a part of Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow. I know that with
the help of the United Way Women’s Initiative, Rani will achieve any
goal she sets for herself.
"I am thankful for the support of Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow and for United Way’s belief in my little girl."
– Ron Byrd, Parent
“I and others from the Women’s Initiative have welcomed the opportunity to share what we have learned as women in the workforce with this group of young ladies. I am always truly amazed at the level of excitement generated by the interaction between the girls and the members of the Women’s Initiative. I look forward to sharing in their growth and development as they carve a path to success in school and in life.”
– Angela Dowd-Burton, 2009 Women’s Initiative Co-Chair
