United Way and Penn team-up for 3rd annual PennMOVES (WPVI – 6ABC transcript)
John Rawlins
UNIVERSITY
CITY - June 7, 2009 (WPVI) -- It was a very large yard
sale or, more exactly, a moving sale.
For years, departing Penn students left behind tons of used, but still usable items destined for the trash.
Some, who thought that was a waste, came up with the idea of this massive two day sale known as Penn Moves.
"Yesterday we had TVs, refrigerators, microwaves, computers. These are things students can't take on an airplane," Barbara Lea-Kruger of the University of Pennsylvania said.
The list of items also includes furniture, boots, lamps, coffee makers, and clothes. The clothes, themselves, include 23 tons of Ivy League clothing.
"You've got to take your time and be pretty patient, but there's a couple good things in here; you might as well spend a dollar," Nicole Starke of Drexel Hill said.
A Penn official says, in some cases, international students who live in tropical climates leave behind items they do not need back home such as lightly used winter coats.
This is the first year Penn opened its sale to the public.
It hopes to raise about $20,000, which will go to the United Way.
